Restoring balance to well-being

     Our meditation technique explained

Our goal is to restore control of thought. Controling your mind is the first step towards sustainable wellness

There are different types of meditation, each with its own neurological and physiological benefits, but regardless of the type of meditation, all forms of meditation benefit your self awareness, focus, sense of self and sense of others. The brain is neuroplastic and this gives it the ability to change and gives you the ability to change your way of thinking

Brief explanation of meditation

Everyone unknowingly meditates some time within their day. When we consider the idea that meditation is the art of focus without being distracted, we can see how pondering something, fixing our attention to complaining and grumbling about past events, or even anticipating future exitement can induce a form of meditation. When done regularly and with intention, meditation improves your ability to choose what and how to think and focus on and it trains the brain to remain focused and to be less easily distracted by any other stimuli. It teaches you to be more aware and in the moment and improves your sense of connectedness. When we meditate, we force a type of focus that doesn't allow for wandering thought but rather intentionally takes the mind where we want it to go. You choose to set your mind on a specific object of focus rather than waiting for the mind to find something to focus on. When we speak about 'emptying' the mind, what is meant is that you remove all other thoughts and ideas and set your mind on one single thing. This creates a quietness within the mind and reduces the "monkey-brain" effect where your mind jumps from one thought to the next.

Frequent meditators develop greater awareness and ability to exercise virtues like self-control, patience, kindness, compassion, love, thoughtfulness, etc. in part due to the type of meditation exercises that they participate in, which stimulates specific parts of the brain and causes specific adaptations within the brain which leads to specific improvements to virtuous behaviours. This change in virtuous behaviour is due to both the power of choice and structural changes within the brain where activity in certain regions decrease while activities in other regions decrease.

The importance of regular quality meditation sessions

Meditation is not supposed to be a mindless act of sitting in silence. It is an intentional act of silencing your mind and focusing on a single thing. This teaches the meditator to exercise self-control by choosing what his mind is allowed to do. Numerous studies have shown various improvements to different brain regions but those changes are dependent on the frequency, intentionality, as well as type of meditation exercise. Different types of focus has different types of effects. When focusing on breathing there is a more clear calming effect to the whole brain than any other type of meditation. When focusing on compassion to others (especially those we consider as enemies) our higher thinking develops, the more logical part of the brain increases in neural activity and we can consider the other person's motivations more readily regardless of our own feelings in the situation.

Our method:

We understand that not everyone knows or understands meditation, its benefits or its limits. We have introduced guided meditation which starts with the mind body connection and progresses towards the more abstract concepts of meditation such as emotional meditation or feeling meditation. There is a general pattern we follow from the get-go with one section which introduces the type of meditation that is being done and this section is the only change.
